Women account for one-half of the potential human capital in any economy. More than half a billion women have joined the world’s work force over the past 30 years, and they make up 40 percent of the agriculture labor force. According to the World Bank, countries with greater gender equality are more prosperous and competitive.

While women make up more than 40 percent of the agriculture labor force only 3 to 20 percent are landholders. In Africa, women-owned enterprises make up as little as 10 percent of all businesses. In South Asia, that number is only 3 percent. And despite representing half the global population, women comprise less than 20 percent of the world's legislators.

Getting to the Root of Addiction: Dual-diagnosis often comes with a long line of misconceptions. Drug addicts tend to have an underlying mental illness along with their addiction that, if not diagnosed and treated, will further drug abuse, relapse, and/or mental torment. In this session, we will discuss addiction and its impact on mental illness. You will learn the importance of treating both conditions at the same time and where to find resources and support systems to help you.

With more than one million women behind bars or under the control of the criminal justice system, women are the fastest growing segment of the incarcerated population increasing at nearly double the rate of men since 1985. Incarcerated women are a segment of this population who have remained even more invisible than their male counterparts. Few have bothered to ask who these women are, how they end up in prison, and what type of support they need to resume their lives after their sentences are served.

What happens to the children and families of incarcerated mothers?

  • How have women been disproportionately targeted in the "War on Drugs"
  • The impact on women and the relationship between domestic violence and incarcerated women?
  • What types of alternatives to incarceration will benefit communities?

Vanderbilt University

For the first 40 years of its existence, Vanderbilt was under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. From the outset, Vanderbilt met two definitions of a university: It offered work in the liberal arts and sciences beyond the baccalaureate degree and it embraced several professional schools in addition to its college

James H. Kirkland, the longest-serving chancellor in university history 1893-1937, followed Chancellor Garland. He guided Vanderbilt to rebuild after a fire in 1905 that consumed the main building.

Recognizing the assets of individuals and communities is more likely to inspire positive action for change from within than an exclusive focus on needs and problems.
